Jared Golden’s second thoughts on gun control

.

Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) said that he was reversing his opposition to banning military-style rifles after 18 people were killed in a mass shooting on Wednesday in his hometown of Lewiston, Maine. (Rolling Stones, October 2023)

Here are the statements of this nitwit, one without and one with my running commentary.  Of course, given the state of affairs, including Senator Susan Collin’s continued resistance to meaningful gun control, we should be grateful for a reversal, no matter how motivated and how late:

“Out of fear of this dangerous world that we live in, in my determination to protect my own daughter and wife in our own community, because of a false confidence that our community was above this, among many other misjudgments, I have opposed efforts to ban deadly weapons of war, like the assault rifle used to carry out this crime,” Golden said during a press conference Thursday.

“The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why I now call on the United States Congress to ban assault rifles, like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in my hometown of Lewiston, Maine,” he continued, promising that “for the good of my community, I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time that I have left in Congress.

“To the people of Lewiston, my constituents throughout the 2nd District, to those who lost loved ones and to those who have been harmed, I ask for forgiveness and support as I seek to put an end to these terrible shootings.”

“Out of fear of this dangerous world that we live in [which – any thinking person might surmise – has become more dangerous with the legalization of assault weapons], in my determination to protect my own daughter and wife in our own community [daughter and wife – flags to garner sympathy — it surely doesn’t make sense for a congressman to base his decisions exclusively on worries about his own family, without a thought about the fate of his constituency] because of a false confidence that our community was above this [“this” being what? The possibility that an assault weapon might be used in offense, rather than in defense?  The possibility that just one, merely one, member of that community might get the idea of using the weapon to exert absolute power? Here he waffles; the absence of the man’s rationality is on full display] and that we could be in full control [yeah, in full control of all our defensive weaponry], among many other misjudgments, I have opposed efforts to ban deadly weapons of war [now he has already adopted the precise language of proponents of the ban: “weapons of war”, a phrase he would never have uttered when he was one of the five Democrats opposing the ban in 2022], like the assault rifle used to carry out this crime,” Golden said during a press conference Thursday.

“The time has now come [“the time has now come” is itself a way of phrasing that replaces attribution of cause with a nebulous attribution to fate] for me to take responsibility for this failure [he has not spelled the nature of the failure – let’s call it out: a massive failure of judgment, which should disqualify him from any position of leadership], which is why I now call on the United States Congress to ban assault rifles, like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in my hometown of Lewiston, Maine,” he continued, promising that “for the good of my community, I will work with any colleague to get this done in the time that I have left in Congress.” [yep, it has to happen right here, in his hometown, since all evidence from mass shootings elsewhere, including the images of distraught survivors and blood shed on furniture and asphalt was not convincing enough for him to come to this exact conclusion years before]

“To the people of Lewiston, my constituents throughout the 2nd District, to those who lost loved ones and to those who have been harmed, I ask for forgiveness and support as I seek to put an end to these terrible shootings.” [What, all of a sudden prayers don’t help any more?]
