The Sound My Dog Invokes

The sound the sight of my dog invokes in some women as she totters along, half-blind and aimless, yet still as beautiful as when she was a puppy, is difficult to render in writing. It is a sound of motherly compassion, otherwise reserved for helpless babies. It starts high-pitched, with a sound like uuu then descends almost half an octave where it lands on a sound close to the Swedish o with a little circle on top. It is rather sung than spoken, and it comes from the hollow of the throat, from a place, in other words, much closer to the heart than the normal utterances with which a day is spent.
