Here are peas, cucumbers, pole beans and lettuce all sharing a single plot.

The peas and cucumbers will go up the trellises on either side; the beans will climb up the strings; and the lettuce will mature before being shaded by the beans.

There is a flat stone in the middle of the bed.  This is a good question.  It is planted there to act as a platform for a stake that will support the middle of the cross-bar when the weight of the bean stalks becomes too large, later in July.
