Notes on Cenotes

Cenotes (sinkholes) form a halfring on the Ycatan peninsual with a radius of 50 km, around a point that marks the impact of the large meteoroid that wiped out much of life, including the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The crater created by the impact, which is called Chicxulub, has a diameter of 180 km.

Artist’s impression of what the crater must of looked like after the impact (of course, we would have needed to wait for a number of years before getting such a clear view!)

Without the impact of the meteoroid, mammals would not have developed. Without it, we wouldn’t be here. It was, without exaggeration, the luckiest event in the history of mankind.

It’s awesome to swim in a cenote. The water is very deep, with the color of azure. The water is cool but not frigid. Stalactites reach down from the walls above. Mangrove roots travel all the way from the surface to find the water.

      Marilyn,
I’m going through the comment history and found yours again. Thanks! Go to franxfiction and look up AAN ZEE. It was published in Oct 2019 but the publisher did a bad job with publicity and distribution. But now they published another edition in Europe with a lot of publicity, look at multiple distribution links. Let me know if you like the book. best, Joachim
