Tunnel Vow

Just after passing the dog run on 72nd street there is the underpass under the Hudson parkway.  It’s a depressing place, with puddles and acoustics that make you want to run and get out of it as quickly as possible on the other side.

Think of my surprise to see the outline of a heart, laid out on the ground in rose petals, surrounded by burning candles, and right next to it someone, a man, on his knees proposing to a woman.

This was all recorded by another man for posterity, or as long as the digital format would last.  I initially stopped with my dog, torn between the idea that our appearance in the movie would be a sacrilege and the idea that, on the contrary, our passing by would lend authenticity to the recording.  I finally decided for the second interpretation and walked right by.

What did he say to her? I don’t have the foggiest idea.  But why choose this place, among all places in Manhattan? Again he is the only one who could give us a clue.
