New Year Resolution

Walking along the river I saw what I believe was a New Year’s Resolution in progress.  A man had parked a bike under a tree on the side of the walkway, and was standing on a rock right by the water.  Oblivious to the surrounding, which included the blue glittering river, and a band of light across — New Jersey eagerly receiving the first light of the day —  he communed with his cellular phone, by typing with a finger of his right hand.  I imagined him getting up in the morning, thinking of the perfect place where to make his New Year’s Resolution.  He thought about this particular tree, and this particular rock, and how to get there on his bike since without this kind of perfection at the time of its conception, the Resolution would not come true.
