Fear of Heights

My dog Sophie, in her 16th year, has developed a fear of heights. The depth of the fall she fears is a staggering 11 floors, not counting the basement and sub-basement below it. The moment of fear occurs every time when she steps from the hallway floor into the elevator, and has to cross a gap one inch and a half wide. She is unaware of the fact that only dogs with that size can fall into the abyss, and that even though she lost a lot of weight lately, she is unable to fit into the gap, by virtue of what structural biologists would call steric hindrance.

Of course, there is no way to get these basic geometrical facts across to her. Adding to her innate inability to understand human language, she has now also lost the ability to hear any sounds, whether or not they carry meaning.
