After Sandy

.

I was able to watch Sandy from the comfort of my 11th floor apartment.  I saw rain move horizontally, trees being tossed in the intense wind, birds struggling to keep their balance in flight, dogs  in fast-pasted poop-and-pee performances as their owners struggled to stay dry, umbrellas being turned upside down, but nothing really serious, comparable to the ghastly images I saw on TV.

But as I look at the image of the vast storm, vast enough to show up as a palm-sized spiral on a globe used for classrooms, I’m wondering what will be next.  The world in which larger and larger catastrophes happen by default, through human inaction, seems still acceptable.  I didn’t hear a single voice calling for some type of moratorium,

“WAIT, WAIT, THIS IS MADNESS, AREN’T WE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT?”
