A Question of Competence

Dear XXXX:
.
This message relates to your following question:
.
“Based on both your extraordinary success and unique experiences/perspective, if possible, at all, could you comment whether you agree or disagree [with the notion] that people with talent in the sciences would make judicious decisions in the socio-political realm”.
.
–The question you raise is important since many people assume by default that achievements and good judgment in one (often narrow) area of science implies competence in other areas od science or worse, in the socio-political realm.
.
–Here is my answer to your question:
 .
–Good judgment, intelligence if you will, is just a device that needs content to work with.  If I want to put it to use in another field, I have to know that field very well — as well as I know the field I got my Prize in.  If anyone ventures to offer opinions in fields outside his factual knowledge, you shouldn’t trust these opinions.
.
–I hope this helps!
