New Life

.

I was in Sydney recently, at the International Conference on Electron Microscopy, and reunited with a friend whom I met in 1974 when I attended an early precursor of that conference in Canberra.

At that time he took me to places with his car, to the bush and to an event at the university where independent video artists presented their work.

Unforgettable to me was one video showing plants — brush, trees, grass in its many forms — reclaiming their old habitat on abandoned highways; a reminder that nature is here to stay and that we are nothing but a foolish interloper.

Here is a plant that got a foothold right next to a plastic pipe on the River-walk along the Hudson.  My thoughts are with you.  There is nothing as dead as a plastic pipe.
