Litfaß Säule

[Glancing image of a Litfaß Säule in Krakow]

Seeing a Litfass Säule in Krakow invoked childhood memories from Germany in the 50s where these advertisement columns were everywhere.

These were large cylindrical columns made of concrete, erected for the mere purpose of acting as walls for advertisements, such as for concerts, circuses, lectures.

Now with the powers of the internet I finally found out the origin: Ernst Theodor Amandus Litfaß (* 11. Februar 1816 in Berlin; † 27. Dezember 1874 in Wiesbaden), a printer and entrepreneur who  proposed this kind of posting to keep walls of buildings free of this blight.

As a congratulation to your nobelprize, here’s a digest of a poem by Joachim Ringelnatz, German writer, cabaret artist and painter:

    Die Litfaßsäulen

    Es stehen die Litfaßsäulen
    Verstreut, den Leuchttürmen gleich,
Und lassen vom Wind sich umheulen,
Und werden im Regen ganz weich.

Und rufen und locken und preisen
    Aus buntem und grellem Papier
Und drohen und stechen und beißen
Und lügen noch schlimmer als wir.

    Theater- Auktion-Zigaretten-
    Wohltätigkeits-Raubmord- und Sport-
    Proteste- Amtliche- Betten.
Kurz alles in Bild und Wort.

Ich lese das ernst ohne Pause.
    Mich interessiert sowas sehr.
Und meiner Frau sag’ zu Hause
    Ich alles dann auswendig her.

    Ihr Sinn für Romane, Gedichte
Und Zeitungen ist nicht so groß.
    Sie hört meine Litfaßberichte ,
Und abends ziehn wir dann los.

Und wie, in Sturm und in Wellen,
    Die Litfaßsäulen starr stehn,
    Und so sollen am aktuellen
Auch wir nicht etwa achtlos vorübergehn.

First verse in English with help from DEEPL.Com:

The advertising pillars are scattered around like lighthouses
And let the wind howl around you,
And let the rain become quite soft.
And call and entice and praise
From brightly colored and gaudy paper.
And threaten and stab and bite
And lie even worse than we do.
